A cover for our Kindle

Did I tell you we bought a new Kindle paperwhite recently? We love it! I downloaded a lot of free classics from Amazon; my first one being "Secret Adversary" by Agatha Christie. It is the first novel of the Tommy-Tuppence series. They are not married yet in this novel. I enjoyed reading it on my kindle. :)

It was time to make a cover for our kindle; and I finally completed making it.

Doesn't it look pretty? Here's how it looks from the inside.

How did I make it? Well here is the list of stuff I used:

1. Two inch elastic and one button for the closure
2. Outside fabric - 21.5" X 5.75" piece and 8" X 5.75" piece (white and pink floral print)
3. Inside fabric - 14" X 5.75" piece (blue and green plaid flannel)
4. Batting - 22" X 6"
5. 2-inch bias cut of the fabric around 60" length

First joined the 14" X 5.75" plaid fabric with the 8" X 5.75" floral print to make a 21.5" X 5.75" piece.

Then prepared the quilt sandwich as shown below: the outside fabric, then batting and then the inside fabric (plaid plus floral print joined piece)

I quilted the pieces together. We can use pins to hold the layers together.

The batting is a little larger than the fabric pieces. This may be helpful while sewing the layers together. Even if the inner fabric gets pulled a little it is okay as it will not be seen from outside. This fabric will be  at the inner side of the pocket that holds the kindle.

Trim the extra batting on all sides and use the 2-inch bias tape for binding the piece.

Now it is time for the button and the loop.

I hand-stitched them onto the cover.

Hmm... Can't take my eyes off this new cover!! :)

It stands for To Be Or Not To Be...

The story is set in a futuristic time when mortality has been conquered and death is voluntary. The population is constant. If there is to be a birth of a baby, someone needs to volunteer to die; only then the birth is allowed. During this age, a mother is giving birth to triplets and what happens to the babies is the story.

It is free on amazon. Read it. It will not take more than half an hour.

I read it on my cellphone. The kindle app is so easy to use and can be installed on any electronic device. 

Brock Street

On the way to office, I see this covered bridge and tell myself that I will ask V to take me here. I memorize the name of the street: "Brock St." I save the name in my cell phone and tell myself again and again that we need to visit the bridge when V is in town.

V is in town; but we never get to go out. I am busy with work and he is busy with work. The day V has to leave, he sneaks me out to where? To Brock Street... Yipeee! :)

We pass the covered bridge. 

It passes over the twin brooks. Now comes the surprise. 

There is a whole park out there... 

Covered with snow... 

with a half-frozen lake... 

 

Oh! What an experience! 

"Wish we had more time," I sigh.

Around the world in 80 days

I know I know... This book is a very old one... But a very interesting one, ain't it? It is not my kind of a book... Hardly any dialogues... And pages and pages of description of the scenes... 

I had heard of this book during my childhood when I was reading "The Mysterious Island" (by the same author). This time when I chanced upon the book during a used-books sale, I told myself: "Why not give this a try?"

I have to admit; I love the book. The story moves at a very fast pace unlike most other books written during the same period. There are lot of pages about India as well as about the US. It is very exciting to read about how people traveled during those days. The suspense of whether the main character in the story wins the bet of traveling the world in 80 days kept me turning pages!

Can't wait to read his "20,000 leagues under the sea" and "A journey to the center of the earth"!!! :-)

Mini Grand Central!

The Union Station at New Haven looks a little like Grand Central from the inside. May be it is not as grand as the Grand Central in New York City. But it is a mini-Grand Central with it quaint ticket counters, the warm yellow lighting and the seating arrangements. I wish V was with me to share the moment.

It was beautifully decked up for the Christmas

What I liked the best was the board that displayed the train information. Every time there was a change in schedule, the letters in the rows moved rapidly and finally showed the train name and its new arrival/departure time. It reminded of the movie: Terminal.

I did not visit this place just for sight-seeing; I had a train to board. My first experience in the Amtrak - Acela Express! Wow! Loved the experience. The interior of the train looked like the business class section of a flight. We even have free wifi on board. There is more than enough legroom and lot of overhead space to store our luggage.

I wish I had traveled during the day time; I would have surely enjoyed the landscape outside the window. May be some other time! :)
